CONCEPT & BRIEF

Spatial Narrative

Overview

An exploration in dual-volume massing, The Monolith Residence demonstrates spatial zoning between social cantilevered living areas and grounded private family quarters.

Design Challenge:

Balancing open expansive sightlines with solar heat gain mitigation and privacy in an open-plot setting.

Architectural Response:

A double-height central living volume shielded by deep cantilevered roof planes and automated bronze louvers, enabling natural cross-ventilation.

Design Study MonographThis monograph represents an architectural concept study exploring spatial massing, interior zoning, and material craft.

The spatial brief required a sanctuary that balances generous entertaining spaces with secluded, tranquil family zones. Our design response is a dual-volume composition: a grounded natural stone base supporting a suspended board-formed concrete mass.

Inside, a double-height central gallery serves as a thermal buffer and social anchor. Hand-burnished plaster walls, smoked oak flooring, and custom metalwork establish a warm, tactile interior dialogue.

Strategic perimeter light slots cast evolving shadows across textured surfaces throughout the day, reducing reliance on artificial illumination.

Key Spatial Features

  • Double-height central living gallery with motorized glass panels
  • Cantilevered terrace deck with linear reflection water body
  • Central internal courtyard for natural micro-climate buffering
  • Custom bronze kitchen island and bespoke millwork joinery
