Spatial Narrative
Overview
A structural renovation study demonstrating how aging masonry envelopes can be re-engineered with steel mezzanines and modern climate systems.
Design Challenge:
Upgrading electrical, plumbing, and thermal insulation without damaging structural brick walls.
Architectural Response:
Inserting an independent freestanding steel frame that carries all mechanical services and mezzanine floor plates.
Renovating existing spaces requires diagnosing what to preserve and what to surgically remove. We stripped away decades of disjointed partitions to expose structural brick arches.
A freestanding blackened steel mezzanine floats inside the central volume, creating multi-tier work zones while preserving the historic perimeter masonry untouched.
Lime-plastered surfaces and clean modern glazing create a deliberate, refined contrast with the rugged existing brickwork.
